WHAT IF I NEED TO TRAVEL THROUGH A LAND BORDER POST FOR AN EMERGENCY UNDER ADJUSTED ALERT LEVEL 3?

As of 11 January 2021, all South Africa’s land ports of entry are closed. These border posts will remain closed until 15 February 2021.

Exceptions include:

  1. The transportation of fuel, cargo and goods.
  2. Emergency medical attention for a life-threatening condition, with proof of such treatment, until 15 February 2021. Proof of treatment must be presented to the Port Manager at the border post.
  3. The return to South Africa of:
    • South African nationals,
    • South African Permanent Residents,
    • Persons with long term residence visas,
    • A spouse with a visa,
    • A child or children with visas,
    • A person with a work visa,
    • A holder of a business visa.
  4. Travel for a funeral for family members in the first degree of kinship to the deceased.
  5. The deportation of foreign nationals.
  6. The departure of a foreign national to his or her country of nationality or permanent residence.
  7. The departure of a South African national, or South African permanent resident to his or her place of employment, study or residence, outside South Africa.
  8. Daily commuters from neighbouring countries who attend school in South Africa, and who are allowed entry and exit into the country subject to all health protocols.
  9. Any other exceptions as may be determined by the Minister of Home Affairs.

 

For any type of emergency travel not specified above, you can apply for permission from the Minister of Home Affairs at covid19exceptions@dha.gov.za.
